Space Release
Space Release takes the attributes of site which contrast to the gallery to create discourse around the value and function of this alternative within exhibition-making - looking at the role of site within production and display. Principally based within the Stephenson Works building in Newcastle upon Tyne 'Space Release' will utilise this site (the first purpose-built locomotive factory in the world, positioned within a regeneration site) as a departure point to explore space as a formative moment.

Six Lines of Flight: Shifting Geographies in Contemporary Art
This international group exhibition convenes artists from six cities around the globe that have become burgeoning artistic centers: Beirut, Lebanon; Cali, Colombia; Cluj, Romania; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; San Francisco, United States; and Tangier, Morocco. All of these places have active art communities that extend beyond their own regions to become international places of exchange.

Now I Gotta Reason
In 1969, as part of his ‘Useful Art Manifesto’, Argentinian artist Eduardo Costa described the term ‘useful art’ as art that should have a direct social utility and claimed that the artworks he “should attack the myth of the uselessness of the arts and make a modest contribution to improving the conditions of urban life”. Here, Costa echoes the theories of 19th century art critic John Ruskin, advocating the importance of the social value of art.

Johanna Billing: I'm Gonna Live Anyhow Until I Die
‘I’m Gonna Live Anyhow Until I Die’ (2012) is a new short film by Johanna Billing. Co-commissioned by the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin and the MAC in Belfast to mark the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy, it focuses on the individual within representations of changing societies, and is currently on show at Hollybush Gardens. Joachim Koester
Charlottenborg is proud to present a solo exhibition by Joachim Koester, one of the most significant Danish artists of his generation. The exhibition is the artist’s largest and most comprehensive project to date in his home country, and is a survey of his works from 2005 to 2012. The project features film, photography and installation, including many pieces that explore forgotten histories and altered states, and is part of Charlottenborg’s contribution to the Copenhagen Art Festival.
