Decor: An exhibition by the Grantchester Pottery
Looking back at Conceptualism from the vantage point of 1986, writes Glenn Adamson in Thinking Through Craft, the British artist Victor Burgin isolated the rejection of the action and the object as a particularly important breakthrough: ‘Art practice was no longer to be defined as an artisanal activity, a process of crafting fine objects in a given medium, it was rather to be seen as a set of operations performed in a field of signifying practices, perhaps centred on a medium but certainly not bounded by it.’ The Grantchester Pottery, a decorative arts company comprising the artists Phil Root & Giles Round, operates along the lines of this slippery field of signifying practices and appropriation.

Pavilion
David Dale Gallery & Studios are pleased to present Pavilion, an exhibition of new work by James Clarkson featuring contributions by Rachel Adams, Laura Aldridge, James McLardy, Ciara Phillips and Kevin Pollock. Acknowledging the influence that mass-produced design’s interpretation of High Modernism extends, Clarkson reinterprets the values dictated by Modernism – though, generally, experienced through the distorting lens of these copies. The simulacrum of objects and ideas as the most successful manifestation of them.

Inspired by the idea of an imagined society in which psychotherapy is a freely available drop-in service, Rashid Johnson’s installation of large-scale paintings, hanging plants, Persian rugs and four wooden day beds questions established definitions of the art object and its limitations, as well as the relationship between individual and shared cultural experience.
